So many film-related things are kicking into gear this week that there's only space for quick mentions and some signposts for further info. This weekend, Sept. 5-7 at the Dobie Theatre, the Chicano/Latino Film Forum presents the El Teatro Campesino Film Festival, which will feature all the film and video works ever created by the well-known farmworker troupe. Some films include Zoot Suit and La Bamba, and longtime Teatro Campesino member Rosa Apodaca will help put each work into historical context; Tomas Salas will speak about his experience in the making of La Pastorela. The schedule and more info is available by calling 708-0904 or visiting the Film Forum's website at http://members.aol.com/aavila9999... On Sept. 9 and continuing on all the following Tuesdays in September is the Austin Film Society's (AFS) new series of four films by Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami. For those not hip to it, Iran has one of the hottest national cinemas currently around. The only problem is getting to see these films, since the Iranian officials don't much like them to be shown either at home or abroad (although a newly installed minister of culture is giving some indication of loosening up the ideological stranglehold on the arts). After an international furor, Kiarostami's latest, The Taste of Cherries, was permitted to play the Cannes Film Festival, where it became the co-recipient of the Palme d'Or, the festival's top honor. The four films in the Kiarostami festival were difficult for the AFS to come by and their screening here in town is a dramatic coup. Screening Tue. Sept. 9 at 7pm in the Texas Union Theater, is Where Is the Friend's Home?, a 1987 film that brought Kiarostami his first international attention... The Texas Documentary Tour curated by UT film production head Paul Stekler debuts Wed. Sept. 10, 6:45pm, at the Alamo Drafthouse. The opening film is The Political Education of Maggie Lauterer from his Peabody Award-winning series Vote for Me: Politics in America. For more info see story in this week's "Screens" section... Traveling With the Ancients is a five-week series of videos from indigenous communities around the world that will screen over the next five Thursdays at 6pm at the Austin Museum of Art/Downtown (823 Congress). Showing Thu. Sept. 11 is Por la Tierra by Alberto Muenala, which documents the march on Quito by 8,000 Indians in search of cultural respect... The early registration deadline for the Austin Heart of Film Screenwriters Conference and Film Festival is Sept. 10; the tab is $350. For applications and more info call 800/310-FEST... Reel Women is interested in creating a series of programs for local access television (ACAC) and invites women interested in forming a production crew to get the ball rolling. All levels of experience in all areas of video production are needed. The first meeting is Sun. Sept. 7, 4pm, at ACAC. On another front, Reel Women is also planning a screening of women's film and video works at the Ritz Lounge on Tue., Oct. 14 and has issued a call for works written, produced, or edited by women that are 60 minutes or less in length. The deadline for submissions is Oct. 1; call 448-3828 for more details.
