Dear Editor,
Dwight Martin's criticism of Austin's parking reforms ("
A Tale of Two Austins," Feedback, Jan. 19) is understandable but misguided. Yes, many Austinites need cars to live their daily lives; no, removing parking minimums will not leave suburban and moderate-income areas out to dry. No one's taking parking away, just letting developers provide as much as their situation demands. Mr. Martin is right to support better transit, and I submit that Austin's parking reform will be a powerful force for transit support on its own: Without wasting space on car storage, Austin's tax base to build transit, walkably dense forms of development, and desire for transit will all grow in tandem.
