Parking Perspectives Proliferate

RECEIVED Wed., Jan. 24, 2024

Dear Editor,
Dwight Martin's criticism of Austin's parking reforms ("A Tale of Two Austins," Feedback, Jan. 19) is understandable but misguided. Yes, many Austinites need cars to live their daily lives; no, removing parking minimums will not leave suburban and moderate-income areas out to dry. No one's taking parking away, just letting developers provide as much as their situation demands. Mr. Martin is right to support better transit, and I submit that Austin's parking reform will be a powerful force for transit support on its own: Without wasting space on car storage, Austin's tax base to build transit, walkably dense forms of development, and desire for transit will all grow in tandem.
