Why Owen Wilson?

RECEIVED Wed., April 12, 2023

Dear Editor,
I would like to comment on your use of Owen Wilson on the cover. ["Owen Wilson and the Joy of Paint," Culture, April 7] Why does this insanely rich white man need any more publicity? There are so many other important current events going on in “Austin” that we could feature on the cover. Trans rights are being stripped away, drag queens are under attack, children aren’t going to be allowed to say “gay” in school, gun control is still something that is unimportant, small businesses are closing down, tech world is ruining Austin and pushing out the elderly and low income locals.
And yet, Owen Wilson is in the spotlight? How is this ok? How much money did you guys make from that? Is that why? Is the Chronicle going to go under too because of the issues I listed above? Do y’all have to promote the elite to make ends meet?
I have two children that attend public schools here in Austin. I am fully invested in this city and the changes I have seen over the past 30 years sicken me. No one cares about the environment and it shows. The rich control everything. Maybe Owen Wilson could help?
Thanks for your time,
Nora Wilcoxson

Register and Vote

RECEIVED Wed., April 12, 2023

Dear Editor,
Regarding the Online Voter Registration article by Bruce Elfant [Opinion, March 31]; I agree with everything he wrote. But the reason why the state of Texas does not allow online voter registration is simple. The Republican controlled state does not want to make it easy to register to vote or for voters to vote. Look at all the voting restrictions the Republicans have put in place under the false premise of election security!
If everyone in Texas who can register to vote did so, AND all those registered to vote actually did vote, we might have better representation at both the state and federal level. Again however, the Republican controlled state has done their best to ensure only those that think like them are represented through gerrymandering. Getting everyone to register AND to vote is the only way to change things.

No Good Greg

RECEIVED Wed., April 12, 2023

Dear Editor,
Less than a day after Fox News urges Perry's pardon, Greg Abbott begins the process. He makes no pretense of considering the evidence and shows no respect for the jury, mouthing the tough-guy "stand your ground" slogan to assert that the aggressive Perry was acting in self-defense. But the jury heard Perry say: "I believe he was going to aim at me. I didn’t want to give him a chance to aim at me." If this state of mind justifies five shots from a .357, where is the stopping point? Abbott also complains that the Travis County DA is “progressive,” as if that should taint the verdict. And if Abbott relies in any way on factual material from Perry's kid-glove treatment by the APD (he wasn't even detained after the shooting), he needs to explain how it survives the evidence heard by the jury. But today Abbott feels no duty to inform the public or honor the legal process. A straight shooter long ago, Abbott is now reduced to following Tucker Carlson's instructions to get his political bread buttered. Greg Abbott, the next Daniel Perry or Kyle Rittenhouse is on you.
