Locally Divorced

RECEIVED Wed., Sept. 28, 2022

Dear Editor,
While reviewing your best of Breakfast and Late-Nite Dining, you laud Kerby Lane Cafe for locally sourcing their ingredients [Best of Austin: Restaurants, Dining Out, Sept. 23]. For at least the last 10 years they have NOT purchased anything from local purveyors. Nothing they serve is "often locally sourced." Nothing.
In fact they ended all relationships with local purveyors about 10 years ago. Sounds good, but its simply not true. At all.

Ladybird Laments

RECEIVED Wed., Sept. 28, 2022

Dear Editor,
Twenty-eight thousand colored bulbs covering 16 acres of rough and rocky land dedicated to the conservation of native plants? It was good to read Soll Sussman’s strong opinion piece calling out the Lady Bird Wildflower Center for presenting the Field of Light. [“Opinion: Wildflower Center Fails Its Conservation Mission by Lighting Up Its Landscape,” Sept. 23] Sussman is right to educate people about all the ways this exhibition counters the dark skies movement, but there are plenty of other reasons to oppose it. I thought of the roadrunner we regularly encounter on the trails, the big owls that swoop down from oaks at twilight, even the nocturnal moths. The hordes of people coming at night won't even be able to see or learn about those inhabitants and the natural landscape that Ladybird sought to protect. She can't be resting easy.

Mightily Entertained

RECEIVED Fri., Sept. 23, 2022

Dear Editor,
Michael Clark Madison's Roxy Music review of the Moody Center show [“Roxy Music Airs Out Its Deep Cuts at Ragged-Edged Austin Show,” Sept. 22] had a little too much snark for my taste. He suggests the original members, "with weakened chops" were mainly playing for their own amusement. As someone who was at the show, I can report that the very respectable crowd was mightily entertained and the band appreciated their response. As for chops, yes, Bryan Ferry's voice is shot. But the wisely augmented band was terrific, especially guitarist Phil Manzanera. Those of us who were able to see rock's greatest bands in their prime – and for those who are younger but appreciate that music – are fortunate that we are getting to hear those bands play their music one last time and play it well.
Sincerely,
Allen Rothman
