Dear Editor,
I really can't bring myself to work up much sympathy for the Seaholm residents railing about the train noises ["
Seaholm Residents Got Dem Ol’ Noisy Freight Train Blues," Nov. 23]. Most of them are grownups and should have known that they were buying into train noises when they bought or rented their property.
It's not like the railroad was inaudible or invisible. It's kind of obvious for anyone who goes to the small bother of scouting the neighborhood where they bought in. The Union Pacific's line through Austin is a busy rail corridor and runs trains around the clock. The noises aren't hard to miss. Nor do I have much sympathy for their discomfort. I don't see why the Union Pacific should shut down a major rail artery or Travis County taxpayers should pay billions to relocate the railroad tracks because the tenants and property owners of Seaholm failed to see or hear what they were getting into.
