Houston Deserves Gratitude

RECEIVED Fri., Oct. 26, 2018

Dear Editor,
I was surprised – shocked actually – to read these words in your City Council District One article: “After four years of phones ringing unanswered at the District 1 office under the tenure of retiring CM Ora Houston ...” ["Chronicle Endorsements: City Council," News, Oct. 19].
My experience of working with Council Member Houston's office could not have been more different than you describe. As a nonprofit communications director (until my recent job change) during CM Houston's tenure, I contacted the office by phone and email regularly and was always met with a quick response and with grace. CM Houston and her staff were communicative and honest. Whether or not they were able to help us on any given issue or event, they were always quick to respond, gracious, and honest about the issues and CM Houston's positions and availability.
CM Houston has worked hard on behalf of her community and constituents and deserves better than this from the Chronicle. As she retires, whether you agree or disagree with her, she deserves gratitude for the way she has served.
Sincerely,
Jan Gunter
