Commenters Miss the Point

RECEIVED Sat., Nov. 4, 2017

Dear Editor,
I was disappointed but not at all surprised at the number of wailing protestations to the “Armed White Male Mask” [Oct. 27]. I'm guessing the point of the mask is NOT to claim that most shootings are perpetrated by white males, but that the reporting of the shootings is disproportionately focused on the African-American, Hispanic-American, and Muslim-American communities. Just look at the coverage of these tragedies that appears in the mainstream media – it shouldn't take long for the bias to reveal itself. How many times have you heard/seen the words “white Christian terrorist” in the media? They're usually referred to as a “troubled loner.” Almost every time a shooting by a nonwhite or non-Christian occurs, the speculation about whether the shooter was a terrorist is put forward almost immediately.
If those who protest so loudly can't see/understand this, they're part of the problem.
