The first band to win an Austin Music Poll was Paul Ray & the Cobras, the unofficial house band of Soap Creek Saloon ["Playback – Austin Loses Its Voice: Paul Ray 1942–2016," Music, Jan. 22]. Paul's supple, smooth blues vocals were backed by young Stevie Vaughan on second guitar, Denny Freeman on first. Later, Paul's radio show emphasized the cultural crossroads where the blues, rock & roll, and Austin meet. Paul gave and taught us much – and didn't he ramble? Vale.
