Dear Editor,
The
Chronicle has done such a superior job than other print media on the Austin SSLC story [“
Sun to Set on Severely Disabled Patients,” News, Aug. 15]. I want to add some information. The Austin developer who has already bought and sought rezoning on the edge of the living center campus has thrown a great deal of money around through political campaign contributions, starting as far back as 2001, and continuing through this year. Top beneficiaries of Steve Beuerlein's generosity have been Rick Perry, Jerry Patterson, and Kirk Watson. There is a commonality to the people on this list in that Rick Perry appointed the DADS director who ordered the closure of the living center, which is already occurring before legislative approval has been granted. Jerry Patterson, as land commissioner, issued a report in 2013, which urged the sale of the living center property. Finally, Kirk Watson's office has refused to engage or answer any questions from loyal Democratic constituents on the subject of the closure, and in doing so, is the first Democratic senator from this area to swerve from a total devotion to the living center's continued existence.
