Horns, Hilltoppers Head Into Postseason

The UT Longhorns ended their regular season on a high note Friday, dominating Colorado, 4-1, to nab the second seed in the Big 12 Tournament. They're playing the seventh-seeded Buffaloes again as we go to press Wednesday; the tournament continues with semifinals 7:30pm Friday and the championship game 1pm Sunday, all at Blossom Soccer Stadium, 12002 Jones Maltsberger Rd. in northern San Antonio (see www.texassports.com for more info). With a No. 10 national ranking going into postseason, the Horns look good to host some NCAA tournament action, as well. That starts next weekend, on the road to the Final Four, Dec. 7 & 9 in College Station.

St. Edward's women ended strong as well, beating national No. 4 Incarnate Word 3-1 in San Antonio to win the Heartland Conference and the top seed in the Midwest Region in NCAA Division II. As such, they host the Midwest Regional this weekend: Central Oklahoma plays Fort Lewis Friday, Nov. 9, 2pm. St. Edward's, with a first-game bye, plays the winner Sunday, Nov. 11, 1pm. St. Edward's Soccer Field. $7, $3 seniors and students, $1 under 12.

MLS and Champions League results below …

In a dramatic weekend for Major League Soccer, both conference champs were bounced out of the playoffs in the first round: D.C. United falling to the Chicago Fire and Cuauhtémoc Blanco and Chivas USA going out to the bottom-seeded Kansas City Wizards. Closer to home, the Houston Dynamo got two second-half goals in an unusually raucous Robertson Stadium to pull even with FC Dallas, then two more in overtime to advance. They host K.C. in the Western final, Saturday, 7:30pm. The Eastern final is Chicago at New England, 6:30pm Thursday, Nov. 8, live on ESPN2.

Arsenal and Manchester United – tied atop the English Premier League after a riveting draw on the weekend – on Wednesday became the first teams to clinch spots in the Champions League final 16.
