Daily Screens: Gaming
This Week's Waste of Time
I'm a sucker for anything with "experimental" in the name. I like experimental music, experimental cinema, and, of course, experimental games. That said, browser game Experimental Shooter drew me in with its title and kept me playing with an infectious soundtrack and playing style. Only let-down? There's nothing really experimental about it.

This Week's Waste of Time
True to its name, Super Puzzle Platformer combines elements of puzzle games and platforming. The former is a little bit Tetris and the latter is a little bit Mario. Together they make an arcade throwback that rewards repeat plays. But leave the quarters at home. In fact you don't even need to leave your house. That's how good of a friend I am to you.

This Week's Waste of Time
My appreciation for Stephen Lavelle, aka Increpare, is too much for one blog. I've already made a few of his games the weekly waste of time, but at the rate this guy is churning out mind-bending and downright confusing puzzle games he's already overdue for more blog coverage. He's another smattering of Lavelle's three-quarters baked nuggets of brilliance.

Local App Alert: Connectrode
There are scads of games for portable devices that offer a variation on the match-three or color-matching paradigm. What makes a good iteration of this type of game is accessible controls and addictive gameplay. What makes a great game of this sort, in my opinion, are the details and the depth. Locally developed Connectrode manage to nail them all.

This Week's Waste of Time
You've got to hand it to Adult Swim. Their largely off-the-wall programming is hit or miss, but the promotions department must never sleep to keep their brand looking cool. Whether it's the Singles Collection featuring buzz and prebuzz bands or the solid graphic design on everything they produce, the AS crew is on top of it. And the same goes for video games.

This Week's Waste of Time
What's your plan for the long, fireworkless, Fourth of July weekend? Nothing? Perfect. That means more time to devote to video games, more specifically, free video games. This Week's Waste of Time is the low-fi dogfighting of Luftrauser from the folks at Vlambeer … or Not Vlambeer, I'm not sure if there's a difference.

Gaming Luminary Writes DuckTales Comic
Normally, the fact that a local man wrote a DuckTales comic book wouldn't blip very brightly on the illustrious screen that is Austin's arts scene. But, when that man is also a legend in the video-game industry you take the time to do an email interview.

This Week's Waste of Time
Every generation a game comes along that speaks to the collective consciousness of America, nay, the world. A game so thick with meaning and beauty, it transcends "art" and channels the divine. That game is Sissy's Magical Ponycorn Adventure. Something you should know about the auteur behind this game; she friggin' loves ponycorns.

This Week's Waste of Time
I've covered the genius of Yoshio Ishii in this blog before. Be it his game of self-cooperation Cursor*10 that inspired this column all those years ago or the star-finding artistic experiments or the Hoshi Saga. I recommend you play all of those games first and then check out the newly released sixth-episode in the Hoshi Saga.
