In the case of this week's waste of time we have a graphic artist trying his hand at game-making and largely (although not entirely) succeeding. Platform games, no matter how arty, need a decent jumping mechanism. How else are you going to get to that platform?

Pixelated characters are not necessarily easier to create these days, but it's a design decision that's light on a computer's processing power. While researching Tom Bissell's new book, Extra Lives: Why Games Matter, I came across an argument that games were not art because there is a goal.
