That's Parry With an -A
Stephen Colbert's Super PAC sort of endorses Rick Perry
By Kimberley Jones, 2:25PM, Wed. Aug. 10, 2011
If you're like us, you've found Stephen Colbert's ongoing misadventures forming a Super PAC both informative and hilarious. But in a new commercial directed at Iowa voters, he's thrown some of his Super PAC's pack 'o cash behind Rick Parry. That's Parry [sic] – keep reading for the logic behind the misspelling.
A press release put out this morning explains it all. Well, sort of:
"I called dibs on Rick Parry a long time ago," said Stephen Colbert, President and Assistant Equipment Manager for Colbert Super PAC. "I recognized that he's got the tough talk, the cowboy boots, and the history-of-shooting-coyotes-during-morning-jogs that our country needs. So if anybody is going to be taking unlimited donations and then not be coordinating with his campaign, it's going to be not us. So to prove we're truly uncoordinated, we're asking voters to write in Parry with an A – as in America, IowA, or PresidAnt. You can feel confident he's not asking us to do that."
OK, fine, and funny. But gawd, even if he's making fun of Perry, we're still worried some of Colbert's shine is going to rub off on our super-coiffed guv. Better to follow up a viewing of the commercial (embedded below) with a large dose of The Perry Trap, the Chronicle's clearinghouse of reportage on our laser-sighted pistol-packing leader.
