Cracking the Code on Cinema41
But what's it all mean??

In Marc Savlov's feature "Microcinema Mania" on bimonthly film series Cinema41 (out on stands today), one burning question was left unanswered: Just what the heck does the name Cinema41 mean anyway?
We posed the question to Savlov, who shot Cinema41 founder Ryan Darbonne an exploratory email. This is what Darbonne had to say:
"In the late 60's there was a volunteer run film society, based out of UT, called Cinema 40. They screened "alternative" movies (foreign films, art films, etc...) and managed to get the filmmakers to come present their films. They even managed to bring Godard to Austin to give a bilingual lecture before screening one of his films.
"So as an homage to them and a continuation of that DIY mindset I decided to call our film series Cinema41." And there you have it.
