Small & Creepy (And That’s a Compliment)
AFF to honor Edward Scissorhands scripter
By Kimberley Jones, 7:38AM, Tue. Apr. 5, 2011
Actually, Small & Creepy is the name of 2011 AFF Distinguished Screenwriter recipient Caroline Thompson’s website, but it’s also a pretty decent descriptor of some of the intimate, wonderfully weird scripts she’s written, including three collaborations with Tim Burton.
Thompson’s first produced screen credit was Edward Scissorhands; other Tim Burton projects include The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride. Also on the CV: The Addams Family, Homeward Bound, and The Secret Garden, as well as www.smallandcreepy.com, a website devoted to short films – specifically, “the bizarre and the outrageous, the strange and the twisted, the outside and the anxious” – that Thompson runs with her husband Steve Nicolaides.
Thompson joins previously announced honoree Hart Hanson (Bones), who’ll receive AFF’s Outstanding Television Award at the 18th Annual Austin Film Festival and Conference, which, you might be interested in knowing, runs from Oct. 20-27 this year.
