Big Dipper's Ode to Bubbly Water

The queer rapper releases his first new song in almost a year

Big Dipper, the salacious, sexy bear-bod rapper returns with his new video “LaCroix Boi,” directed by Ryan Ovadia. Known for his lyrical love of all things sex, the queer rapper has switched it up a to bring a downlow lewd ode to the insanely popular sparkling water – LaCroix.

“I have a hard time writing songs about anything but sex,” he explains. “LaCroix is such an innocent product – it’s one of their taglines – I can’t be dirty in this song, but I can have it dripping with innuendo.” And drip it does. Big Baby D.R.A.M. and Erykah Badu's “WiFi” inspired him to take the LaCroix crooning idea and go with it. “It’s this lovely, sort of sensual, delicate song, but the content is about something pretty mundane. This is so brilliant.”

The song, which moves into a new territory for Big Dipper with an R&B sound and falsetto signing, was originally intended to be an interlude for his upcoming album (expected to be released within the year). But one day, he found himself sipping on a cool can of mango-flavored seltzer water, and everything fell into place. “It’s funny,” he says of the song. “So we decided to make it full-length and put it out to the world.”

There’s no shortage of LaCroix products in the video – from a fridge full of the bubbly drink to a shiny disco ball-like jacket made entirely of LaCroix cans designed by Harwood Lee. A leather collar studded with the words “LaCroix Boi” attests to the rapper’s commitment to the sparkling water. Unfortunately, the company wasn’t interested in working with Big Dipper. "It’s really hard to just blindly email out to a corporation and be like, ‘Hey I’m going to make a video; it’s going to be really awesome – do you want to be involved?’ If someone did that to me I’d be like, ‘pass.’”

According to Big Dipper, the company basically said “good luck” and went its separate way. “They may not love me, but I still love their product. The point was to do something funny anyway.”

But raunchy song lovers shouldn’t fret. Big Dipper confirms he’ll be shooting another video this week for his song “Chunkita.” This one is about “eating ass,” which is more in line with his regular subject material. “Chunkita” is expected to be released at the end of June or early July. The artist says he’s been “perfecting” his next album for the past two years and is anticipating a release within the next year. He hopes the new tunes will bring him back to Austin for some nonfestival shows. "I love Austin – I'd like to really get to see the city."
