Tonight: Mail Art with Dandy & Friends
Get crafty with Dandy for some good causes
By Rob Cohen, 2:00PM, Wed. Nov. 9, 2011
Wind, rain or shine, the mail, it never fails. It makes me want to wag my tail. When it comes I want to wail, "Maaaaaaail!" Tonight we at Gay Place invite you to use the power of the post to reach out for three (okay, maybe four or five) great causes.
Basically we have three missions and you can choose to participate in any, all, or none of them!
Card Making/Sending
It might be as simple as hand signing a store-bought Snoopy card with a message of hope. Or it might be some insane work of art you created that will be sent off to someone you've never met (and probably never will). However it manifests, messages of glad tidings are the goal.
We are aiming to join forces with folks local and statewide involved in this sort of outreach. Already, we are committing cards to drag diva Pearle E. Gates' mission to put hand-written messages in the hands of folks with HIV/AIDS. Depending on the response, we will also reach out to other local AIDS non-profits and hospices with similar missions. We're also in cahoots with Nubian Queen Lola and the gang at Inside Books to similarly brighten the days of some incarcerated queers and then some.
Occupy the Mailbox
We wish to invite folks to bring Pre-Paid Postage Return envelopes to send back to banks and credit card companies to accomplish two goals: To punk these institutions that have had more than a hand at destroying the U.S. economy and to support our beleaguered U.S. Postal Service, itself a near-casualty in this era of deregulation and corporate greed.
Check out the video that inspired us below.
Camaraderie
Many of us have like-minds. Many of us have differing opinions about similar goals. Many of us have great ideas. Many of us are talented little fuckers. Wouldn't it be nice to assemble all of this under one roof for a few hours each week?
We'll have a basic array of cards, card stock, scissors, glue sticks, markers, and maybe snacks to get you started, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO BRING ART SUPPLIES!
Please RSVP, on our Facebook event page so we know to warn Bern and message Dandy Unicorn directly if you have any items you'd like to contribute. We hope to see you tonight!
