Walking to class at Texas State University on Feb. 28, Eden Welply was struck by a car. A beloved figure in the indie-folk scene, the local musician had been booked to play Beerland the same night with Teddy Glass, Marmalakes, and Jordan Moser.
The talented guitarist/singer sustained multiple injuries, including head wounds and bone fractures. According to a GoFundMe campaign set up by her family, Welply is currently stable and recovering in the ICU. Since she’s uninsured, the fundraiser earmarks all financial support for medical bills, living expenses, and eventual physical therapy.
“Eden and her family will not be able to solely support the financial burden that faces them,” states the GoFundMe post. Over 300 individuals already donated during the fundraiser’s first two days, working towards a goal of $50,000.
A morning barista at Radio Coffee & Beer, Welply’s workplace hosts a benefit this Sunday night, with all profits donated to the cause. A stacked bill of Batty Jr., Marijuana Sweet Tooth, Cross Record, Jack & the Hacks, and Dwight Smith powers the free event, which includes merchandise raffles.
Following the accident, community support poured onto social media. Emily Rose of local acts Nevil and Van Mary called Welply “a brilliant, talented, beautiful human being,” while Texas State professor Erina Duganne wrote: “This amazing human is one of my most beloved art history students.” Smith added, “Of course there could not be a more resilient, positive, and stubbornly determined person to go through this ordeal than her.”
Welply planned to record her first album in Portland during spring break, followed by her college graduation in December. Hear her perform the lovely “Time” at a house show in January, and watch ’til the end for an adorable group singalong:
