AIDS-related pain? Get paid for research!
By Sandy Bartlett, Fri., June 11, 2004
PN is most often caused by anti-HIV drugs, especially the "D-drugs" ddC (Hivid), ddI (Videx), d4T (Zerit) although it may also be caused by HIV infection itself. They damage the nerves leading to the feet (and hands), causing pain messages to be sent to the brain.
Central Texas Clinical Research is taking part in trials of two different PN therapies, so they are seeking HIV-infected patients who have been diagnosed as having PN (either DSP or ATN). Participants will be compensated for their help.
One study ("Injections") consists of eight visits over nine weeks. Participants will receive free medical exams, the study-related medication, and $20 per visit. Excluded from taking part are diabetics taking insulin and patients with compression-related neuropathy, a history of vitamin B12 deficiency, or active cancer.
The second study ("Capsacin Immersion") will last a year 52 weeks with 11 visits. Qualifying participants will receive free medical exams, the study-related medication, and $50 per visit.
Austin is lucky to have AIDS docs who are also interested in clinical research, hence CTCR. They and the research volunteers contribute to solutions for HIV-related problems, and patients get opportunities for access to helpful therapies years before the products come to market. If you are a poz person suffering from PN, call Central Texas Clinical Research at 480-9660 and ask about participating.
