Tub Thumpin'

If having the kids home from school wasn't enough, a whole lotta racket's gonna be going on this Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 4, 9am-5pm, at Central Texas Harley, 804 E. Braker @ I-35. Sure, that seems like a, duh, redundant statement considering the two-wheeled hogs propensity for noise-making whenever straddled by some hefty, leather-clad weekend warrior. But on this particular holiday day, even the belch of the big beast will seem but a mere whisper in comparison to what the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation will be doling out. Six drummers who've hoofed around town collecting donations for said foundation will be plying their trade as you ply your otology neurologists' at the Drum-a-Thon to Cure Diabetes. Yup, you'll be scheduling an appointment with the ol' ear doctor after this raiser of both funds and decibels gets through with ya. And fret not, if you haven't donated yet, the cycle shoppe, along with co-sponsors Fibes Drum Company, will collect throughout the day. We wondered if our ol' pal, trapmeister Terri Lord (Lord-Douglas-Phillips and Sexy Finger Champs), who is known for jumping behind a kit and slappin' the skins for just about every cause in town, was planning to participate. Well, the non-news here is that she's not (because she didn't know about it until we asked), but in investigating the event further, she did discover that not all of the drummers will be playing at once (damn!), but instead, playing in separate shifts of a half hour each. While we, personally, would pay good money to see six drummers on six trap kits going at it six different ways from Sunday, all together, all at once, we can see how most folks might appreciate a bit of white space in their cacophony. So there you have it. 450-1965.

Daddy Need a New Pair of Pants; Baby Needs a New Pair of Shoes!

Nothing gnarlier than naked aching dogs. Ooh, the feet are the pathway to the soul, not to mention the neurological pathway to so many vital organs. So it stands to reason that there;s nothing finer than a pair of warm, new shoes! Shoes for Orphan Souls is an effort to get shoes, socks, and shoestrings over to kids in orphanages in Russia, Romania, and China. A bus is being filled locally to send up to Dallas, from where it will make its way East, globally, to orphanages in need. Last year, the organization delivered more than 20,000 pairs of shoes to Russia; this year's goal is 50,000 pairs. Donations will only be accepted through tonight, Thursday, Aug. 31, at most AT&T locations, at Lutheran Social Services, 314 Highland Mall Blvd., Ste. 200, and at the Buckner Retirement Community Center, 11110 Tom Adams. www.helporphans.com or 454-4611 or 491-2245.
