Happy Father's Day

Dog & Pony Shows
Here are two events to bring out the four-legged beastie (rrrrowwwl!) in you:
- Tonight through Sunday, Jun 24-27, the National Barrel Horse Association hosts its Texas Championships at the Travis County Expo Center, each day at 8am except Sunday (9am), and running well into each evening. More than 1,000 wild riders will compete during this four-day event. Known as the "women's" event of the rodeo, barrel racing has grown into a sport that even includes men in its ranks nowadays. We feel really stupid having typed that very obvious statement, but gee, if things were the other way around, you know we'd probably make a big deal of it, so what the hey ... turnabout is fair play! Another bit of fair play is that all the events are free and open to the public. The public in its goodness certainly will take advantage of the fact that the events are collecting canned goods for Capital Area Food Bank by donating cans by the herd. Yee-haw! 282-2111 or 376-2965.
- The Texas Hearing & Service Dogs people have just heard that the word is official: Their Mighty Texas Dog Walk held back in February through downtown Austin set a new world record for the most dogs walked, according to Guinness. Yes, Guinness, the beer people and the World Record people. But here's the nut: Folks all over the world will be nipping at the heels, as it were, of our record holders. So, THSD is already planning to significantly break their own record next year. And that's where we come in. This year's record breaker was a dog walk of 2,114 leashed beasts. For more info on how you and your pooch can help keep the record in Texas, call THSD. 891-9090.
Got Lactation?
Sometimes our ability to restrain ourselves shocks us silly. Watch us as we suckle our way through this juicy tidbit with nary a drop of innuendo, nor dribble of allusion. (Look! We even purposely spelled "tidbit" correctly!) The Mothers' Milk Bank at Austin (MMBA) is throwing a Grand Opening Party next month. The bank is located at 900 E. 30th. The grand opening, Tue Jul 20, 2-6:30pm, will feature a set by Sara Hickman, a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and fun for all ages. Governed by local doctors and nurses, this nonprofit is asking for your time as Volunteers, and for Donations in the way of both cash support and of the commodity they will be banking. We figured we'd give you a lot of lead time on this one, because as we recall from our own personal experience, this particular liquid asset takes lots of lead time to acquire a sizable stock. 494-0800.
On the Kid Tip
Let's stick with the kid/family theme for a bit here, okeeeday?
- Don't forget: It's Immunization Time in Texas. Don't get caught up in the scheduling nightmare of pre-first-day-of-school. Get it done early. The Austin/Travis County Health & Human Services Department will be hosting a slew of Summer Immunization Clinics. Call for times, dates and locations. While you're at it, or if you are interested in helping but don't have kids of your own, the department is Calling for Volunteers & Donations for their clinics. If you can't take the time (heads up restaurant and business owners!), consider donating soft drinks, sandwich trays, snacks, etc. for the very busy clinic staff. 469-2135.
- The Central East Austin Community Organization (CEACO) hosts a Training Orientation this weekend, Sat, Jun 26, 9am-12:30pm at their Austin Works Together Project room, at1640 E. Second. This will certify eligible Volunteer Mentors to work with folks enrolled in the Success Women & Men or Success Kids self-sufficiency programs. These programs help people break the spirit-breaking (and often backbreaking) cycle of poverty. C'mon, help someone find a better path for his or her life. 472-9057
