Love Being a Girl?
By Kate X Messer, Fri., May 14, 1999
Can I Get a Wheat Wheat?
Live bands, bikes, food, folks, fun ... that's wheat makes our Wheatsville Wheatsville. And wheat's more Wheatsville than that new CD, The Wheat Album? Wheat a minute, we'll tell you wheat's more: The Official CD Release Party for The Wheat Album, that's wheat's more. The 15-track comp features a sheaf of bands which feature employees of the co-op in their rosters -- no chaff, all nuggets, kernels, germs. Some of these very bands shall play: King Cheese, Fifteen Minutes of Shame, and Missing Ingredient, for example. And of course, since this is Bike Austin! Month, there will be a Bicycle Swap Meet (and if yours breaks, you can just give a shout out to the girls at Girl Day -- see above -- who just learned how to fix theirs ... ). The deli will feature its regular goodness: Mmmmmmmm Samoosas! (best Homer Simpson voice), and Amy will be there in the form of an ice cream cart: Mmmmmmm Ice Cream ... All of this wheaty fun happens Sat, May 15, 1-8pm, at -- duh! -- Wheatsville, 3101 Guadalupe. 478-2667.
House of Windsor
Break some ground with the Austin City Council and the Austin Public Library people, who cordially invite you to come on down to the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the new Windsor Park Branch of the Austin Public Library, this Sat, May 15, 10am. There will be music in the air, dignitaries looking dignified, and refreshments to whet, quench, and refresh. The new digs are at 5801 Westminster Dr. 499-7495.
Parental Consent
Columbine notwithstanding, parents have it tough enough. We know. We can relate to single moms, believe you me. And although it's awkward to tell you that we are one ourselves in the royal editorial we, we are one. Yup. What parent isn't looking to improve the relationship with his or her child? We hope not many. Locally, Parents Anonymous of Texas, Inc. supplies a safety net to families in the Austin area with support groups, family education classes, and the like. They are looking for eager volunteers; their next Volunteer Orientation is scheduled for Mon & Wed, May 17 & 19. 459-5490.
Abreast of Opportunities
That's it. Our one joke. Straight-up. No chaser. No more. We're just going to run this Job Opportunity notice as such: The Breast Cancer Resource Center of Austin seeks qualified applicants to fill a staff position for Minority/Medically Underserved Outreach Coordinator. The position is 25 hours a week and pays $10 per hour. Applicants should be bilingual and have much experience providing peer support, information, and referrals or have had personal experience with breast cancer. This same person should have experience coordinating projects in addition to experience with minority outreach, recruiting/supervising volunteers, or experience as a volunteer in a human services field. Be able to respond with empathy and support to clients in stressful situations and be able to handle yourself around a computer. Whew! No phone calls! Send cover letter and résumé to BCRC, PO Box 1532, Austin, TX 78767-1532.
Twisters Tie You Up in a Knot
Hey, it's that time of year again. Tie down the lawnchairs, the potted plants, the family dog, ma, the twisters're comin'. Just the other night some nasty torneeders ripped right through Central Texas causing all sorts of havoc in our neighboring Llano County. It's as good a time as any to remind you of two things: 1) that the American Red Cross of Central Texas exists should you find yourself on the short end of the severe weather stick and 2) that the American Red Cross of Central Texas is always in need of your kind and generous offerings and support. 800/928-4271.
