Determination & Self-Determination

Save Our Springs' Bill Bunch will introduce the Events for East Timorese Self-Determination, Mon, Nov 10, 7pm, at Garrison Hall on the UT Campus. Bunch's comments, the Austin-Indonesia Connection, will precede presentations by the main speakers, Nina Maria Da Costa, President, Timorese Association, Australia ("Human Rights in Occupied East Timor") and Nico Warouw, International Rep, People's Democratic Party, Indonesia ("The Struggle for Democracy in Indonesia"). 339-8265 or 374-9065.

Honor

Austin Latino/a Lesbian & Gay Organization (ALLGO) is launching a new award event. The Paloma Banquet Awards, Sun, Nov 9, 6pm at El Sol y La Luna, 1424 S. Congress, has been initiated "not to elevate a few above the rest, but to exemplify the best of who we are." The banquet, Affirming Our Lives, is $35 per person with tickets available through Informe-SIDA, 1715 E. Sixth, and will feature a performance by the Capital City Men's Choir, and readings by Ana Sisnett and Jesse Johnson. Come and honor these local leaders of our community: Jana Birchum, Media; Dianne Hardy-Garcia, Public Policy; Planned Parenthood, Health; El Sol y La Luna, Commerce; Lourdes Pérez, Arts; and Raul Riojas, Lifetime Achievement. Congratulations, everyone! 472-2001.

Laugh Out Loud

We're not sure what this infers, but comedienne Michele Balan is billed as the "George Burns of lesbian comedy." Perhaps this means she's doomed to perform the same schtick until she's 100 and then croak? Or that she is the ultimate straight man? (Somehow we don't think that's it....) Or that she'll age gracefully, taking on the look and walk of a cute little monkey? Well, Gracie, we don't know, but we hope it's a good thing. The show is a comedy fundraiser for Cornerstone, and Balan, who has shared stages with the likes of Kathy Najimy, Harvey Fierstein, Nell Carter, and Sandra Bernhardt, comes all the way from New York City (or as the salsa ad says, "New York City!?!?") to join the Austin Babtist Women to raise money for the gay & lesbian community center. The show is Sun, Nov 9, 7pm at Esther's Follies. Tickets are still available through Alexis Travel, Lobo Books, and Bookwoman. 708-1515.

Luv Is

Speaking of Cornerstone: They are the site, 1137 Red River, for the Women Luving Women (we just luuuuvvvv that name) Health Awareness Festival, Sat, Nov 15, 11am-4pm. More info next week. 472-2001.

Nasty Pricks

The Austin Harm Reduction Coalition is throwing a party and giving the works. They are presenting Get the Point, a benefit to help fund their efforts to fix the problems of HIV and AIDS transmission among injection drug users. 81/2 Souvenirs' Glover Gill, the Damnations, and Miss Xanna Don't & the Wanted will play at Club de Ville, Thu, Nov 13, 6-10pm. Admission is sliding scale, $7-15. 374-4470.
