It's Up to You Not to Heed the Call-Up You don't hear much about "Conscientious Objectors" these days. They're kind of like the hole in the roof that doesn't get much attention 'til it rains. American Friends Service Committee and Nonmilitary Options for Youth think about that hole in our collective soul a lot and wish to counter the military's $1.9 billion recruiting budget by sponsoring a Public Forum on Military Recruiting, Sat, Sep 6, 7-9:30pm at the Mang house at St. Edward's University. 474-4544. Full of Hopes & Full of Fears Hey, who didn't want to be Bobby Sherman back in the early Seventies? When we saw this PSA for a benefit called Here Comes the Bride, we began to get a whiff of the great pines of the Pacific Northwest and flashed back to our favorite little TV show, Here Come the Brides, about the brother loggers Jason, Joshua, and Jeremy in Seattle -- a kind of 7 Brides for 7 Brothers rip-off that never really took off, but still managed to launch the careers of Sherm and pal, David Soul (yes, of "Hutch" fame), immortalize a truly great theme song, and begin our personal fascination with flannel forever. Well, back to the future: This event is a Bridal Show, Sunday, Sep 7, 12:30-4pm in the Phoenix Ballroom of the Doubletree Hotel, 6505 N. I-35. For just an $8 donation to Austin Metropolitan Ministries (the folks behind Hands on Housing, Community Mentoring Network, InterACT, et al.), you'll dig the latest in wedding gear and services. Plus there'll be a Flashback Fashions retro wedding fashion show. Hmmmmm... perhaps a nappy, red-checked number or maybe something in a nice Tartan plaid.... 472-7627. Leave the Light On, Honey Evenings on the Porch? Jim Swift, eat your heart out. Ahhh, the old codger has probably already covered this. But in case you're the old-fashioned type and get your info from print instead of from the boob tube, here's a quaint event for you to enjoy: The Wells Branch Homestead, 2106 Klattenhoff, is presenting their second in a series of Evenings on the Porch, Thu, Sep 11, 7pm. The musical host is country and folk singer-songwriter, Danny Santos. Oh, and future doings at the Homestead include an 1800s Festival, Sat, Oct 11. The Wells Branch pioneers are currently seeking volunteers to join the fun. 459-HOME. They Be Slammin' Here's your chance to be a bigwig in the local poet circuit (see related story, page 36). The Austin International Poetry Festival (AIPF) is headhunting to fill a few cool admin positions in their nationally... excuse us, internationally respected organization. They seek a Volunteer Coordinator and Poet Corres-pondent, which does not mean that you must compose press releases in iambic pentameter (it couldn't hurt), but does mean you would act as liason to the many talented writers who will join the fest. 918-AIPF. Cross My Art Fourth graders across Texas will participate in this year's Red Cross Draw a Disaster, Learn What to Do Art Contest, Fri, Sep 26, noon at the Dougherty Arts Center, 1110 Barton Springs Road. Kids will learn the importance of preventing, preparing for, and coping with disaster. The art project encourages kids to draw a tornado, fire, flood, or thunderstorm, and illustrate safety tips. Prizes will be awarded. 800/928-4271. Go to Blazes Six neighborhood fire stations (Station 4, 1000 Blanco; Station 6, 1705 S. Congress; Station 16, 7000 Reese; Station 18, 6311 Berkman; Station 25, 5228 Duval; and Station 27, 5401 McCarty) in the Austin Fire Department will host an open house, Family Education Expo, Sat, Sep 6, 2-6pm. 477-9982 or 448-8337. Girlfriend! Go support and meet the regal legal eagle babes of the Women's Advocacy Project, Thu, Sep 11, 5:30-7:30pm at their Fall Fundraiser to benefit their two legal hotlines. One hotline is dedicated to domestic violence calls. The hullabaloo will take place at Women & Their Work, 1710 Lavaca. 476-5377.
