Ring Their Bell

Y'know, the Salvation Army isn't just about primly dressed church matrons ringing bells and slinging buckets. In Austin, they act in concert with some of the area's most progressive and effective public service care groups in their Passages Program, like: Austin Families, Inc., Foundation for the Homeless, Center for Battered Women, HOBO, Caritas, and Youth Options. Their Adopt-a-Student and Adopt-a-Camper programs benefit area kids with needed school and summer camp supplies. They run a halfway house, provide disaster services, and provide shoes for area school kids. They encourage self-sufficiency and at the same time offer temporary assistance for those hard on their luck. Sure, it's a crusade. They evangelize compassion and respect. They could sure use your help in their infant care center, shoe room (for the aforementioned shoe program), and kitchen. 476-1111.

Topless Jugs for Santa!

Precycling, anyone? Hancock Recreation Center needs 2,000 empty plastic gallon milk jugs for its annual December Luminaria Trail. Sure, it's only August, but the fire marshall nixed traditional paper bags a few years back, and it takes a while to go through that much moo juice. Deliver your jugs -- minus tops and well-rinsed please -- to the front desk of the rec center, off 41st, west of Red River, during business hours. 453-7765.

Garageland

Mark your thrift-hound calendar for this Sat, Aug 23. There are Two Big Garage Sales in the same quadrant of town. St. Luke's Infant Care Center at W. Lynn & 14th hosts a sale, 8am-3pm, to support quality daycare. They say that there will be lots of baby stuff. Not like miniature stuff... but, you know, stuff for babies, like: clothing, toys, baby gear, furniture, etc. There will also be a Bake Sale. Yum. 478-3113.

Then, Artists' Legal & Accounting Assistance of Austin (ALAA) hosts its sale the same day, 8am-noon (or so) at 1709 San Antonio. Plus, they are taking donations of junk, quality junque, to sell. Be there at 7am to donate. Or call ahead and arrange something else. 476-4458.

Jam on It

Oh jeeez. Our vernacular is so dated -- so not with-it. We are old. Geezerly. Out of step. Out of sorts. Out of style. Surely there is some hip, swinging way of enticing young teen-types (13-19) to the Back to School Jam, Fri, Aug 29,
7-11pm, at the Alamo Rec Center. It's only a buck. It'll be supervised. There will be food (of the party variety). There will be drink (of the church social variety). And there will be jam (of the live deejay variety). We need the funk. Gotta have that funk! Take me to funkytown! Jam away young whippersnappers, jam away. 474-2806.

Chocolate City

We've just got to find a good stain remover to get these nasty smudgies out of our favorite "Body by Chocolate" shirt. It would come in handy this Sun, Aug 24, 2-5pm for the Chocolate Sunday hosted by Another Way Texas Shares. The organization offers choices for workplaces giving campaigns. And on Sunday for a reasonable $10 they'll give you chocolate, chocolate, chocolate at the Foley's Court in Barton Creek Square Mall. Austin's sauciest purveyors of chocoholism will offer the food of the cocoa gods. 473-2172.

See the center section for Another Theme-Food Event of Note this weekend. 454-5766.

Answers for Your Queeries

What's a Friend of Dot or Daughter of Bilitis to do for a social agenda for the next coupla weekends? Hmmmm, well, there's ALLGO/Informe-SIDA and CEACO's Women/Men on Tap at the Forum, 408 Congress this Sat, Aug 23, 7-9pm. The event is an outreach to gay persons of color. Food and beer are free. 472-2001 or 472-5575.

Lesbos, and we use that term affectionately... (knowingly, intuitively, and with a devilish gleam in our eye) are out in force bench pressing their girlfriends and doing double duty on the squat-thrusts, training for the Lesbolympix. We just love the sound of that. The event will cover all sorts of traditional lesbian sport through the ages: egg toss, pet tricks, cutest dog (hey! no ex-girlfriend jokes!), and of course, watersports (we aren't going there and neither should you). It all happens on Labor Day Weekend, Fri-Sun, Aug 29-31 at Recreation Plantation in Dripping Springs. As with most Rec Plant shindigs, this will have live music, vendors, swimming, camping, and all sorts of mayhem. 512/990-5404.
