The distinguished filmmaking team of producer Ismael Merchant, director James Ivory, and screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala come together once again for this portrait of the tumultuous private life of art titan Pablo Picasso, who is played by acting titan Anthony Hopkins; the film focuses on the mercurial, 10-year-long affair between Picasso and model Francoise Gilot and is told through Gilot's eyes. In his first film project since Defending Your Life, Albert Brooks casts himself as a twice-divorced, science-fiction writer who decides that his problems with women stem from his relationship with his mother and, so, moves back in with mom (played by Debbie Reynolds) in order to straighten out his life; sounds like another fine neurotic mess. THE WAR AT HOME

THE ENGLISH PATIENT

Told largely through the eyes of an unknown English patient in an Italian hospital, the story links four strangers in a tale of intrigue and adventure and is based on the acclaimed novel by Michael Ondaatje; director Anthony Minghella (Truly, Madly, Deeply) adapted the novel for the screen. DEAR GOD

Comedy meister Garry Marshall's newest film tells the story of a cynical con artist who devises a divine new scam while working in the Dead Letter office; it should, at least, give a new spin to the image of postal workers. (Nov. 8)
THE MIRROR HAS TWO FACES
D: Barbra Streisand; with Streisand, Jeff Bridges, Pierce Brosnan, George Segal, Mimi Rogers, Brenda Vaccaro, Lauren Bacall.
Streisand directs herself in this romantic comedy about relationships, sex, and beauty which was scripted by Richard LaGravenese (The Bridges of Madison County, The Fisher King); the firings and departures of many crew and cast members throughout the shoot have provided much grist for gossip over the past year. JINGLE ALL THE WAY

Schwarzenegger teams with Flintstones director Brian Levant for this family picture about a suburban dad trying unsuccessfully to locate the season's hot action figure that's coveted by his son. (Nov. 22)

A law student, played by Trainspotting's Ewan McGregor, takes a part-time job as a night watchman in a morgue just as a serial killer begins terrorizing the city; for director Ole Bornedal, Nightwatch is his American re-make of a movie he made two years ago in Denmark, although this stateside version has a script by Steven Soderbergh. (Nov. 22)
101 DALMATIANS
D: Stephen Herek; with Glenn Close, Jeff Daniels, Joely Richardson, Joan Plowright.
From the looks of things, it seems that Glenn Close is having a blast bitching it up as the evil Cruella De Vil in this live-action version of the Disney chestnut about puppy love and dog-napping; the film is scripted by the king of family film comedy, John Hughes, and is directed by Stephen Herek of Mr. Holland's Opus and Mighty Ducks fame. (Nov. 27)
THE CRUCIBLE

Arthur Miller scripted this screen adaptation of his famous stage play about the Salem witchcraft trials which reteams those Age of Innocence co-stars Daniel Day-Lewis and Winona Ryder, and is directed by The Madness of King George's Nicholas Hytner. (Nov. 27)
DAYLIGHT

When an explosion in a New York-New Jersey tunnel below the Hudson causes both ends to be sealed off, a disparate group of commuters must pull together for survival; it's a good thing the EMS rescue squad has Sylvester Stallone aboard. (Dec. 6)
