Food for Thought

RECEIVED Mon., April 21, 2025

Dear Editor,
What would you do without food? Without food, the body will begin to feed on itself, greedily burning away your fat reserves, and eventually your muscles. Your body will ache all over, begging for release, and death will be just around the corner. This is what 10,000 children experience and die every day. Child malnutrition isn’t just “going hungry.” It's the failure to provide children with the proper nutrients to survive. Children can be fed every day, or even become obese, and still suffer from malnutrition. The rise of processed foods and lack of education surrounding nutrition within the global populace, especially prevalent within developing nations, has renewed an omnipresent danger in the world. Struggling families with little money often find themselves only able to afford cheap processed food, filled with everything but the proper nutrients children need to grow and develop. Without proper nutrition, children find it hard to grow up, leading to detrimental health effects and drastically reducing their life expectancy. While it's easy to donate to programs that feed impoverished populations, donating to educate and financially supporting those at risk of child malnutrition is far more sustainable. We must push for a better life, for the children abroad and your children at home, by donating and volunteering at food banks and NGOs abroad. You can be responsible for saving that kid from the painful wasting of malnutrition, and know you made all the difference.
