Out of the Mouths of Babes

RECEIVED Tue., Feb. 25, 2025

Dear Editor,
My name is Rand Mathews and I am a seventh-grade student in public education. I am trying to stop school vouchers because it would divert money from public schools and give it to private schools. I have created a [Change.org] petition to try and stop these vouchers. It would benefit my petition greatly if it was posted in the newspaper.
Here is one reason why we should stop school vouchers. According to EdChoice's 2019 "Schooling in America" survey, only 40% of low-income families were able to utilize school vouchers for their children's education. Vouchers do not provide transportation for children, and some families might not be able to provide transportation for their children, meaning they would receive a lower education. Lower funding for public schools could cause an increase in class size due to lack of funds. Larger class sizes result in the teacher not being able to focus on students.
One more reason why we should stop vouchers is because if Texas education sank lower on charts due to vouchers, universities could overlook Texas student college applications because Texas education was so bad. Texas is already 38th in education; we do not need it to sink any lower. One last reason why we should stop vouchers is because private schools are not required to have certified teachers. Because of this, education standards could potentially be lower in private schools. For example, a study by researchers at Notre Dame and the University of Kentucky found that students in Ohio's EdChoice voucher program did worse on statewide tests compared to their public school peers.
In conclusion, we should stop school vouchers because they would cause many problems for both teachers and students. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Have a good rest of your day.
