Axis or Allies?

RECEIVED Tue., Feb. 18, 2025

Dear Editor,
I'm a senior and I lose friends monthly. So I cherish and protect my existing friendships. Unfortunately, our vice president and secretary of defense have not learned this valuable lesson in their political capacity. Nor have they learned from history, despite their Ivy league schooling.
Hitler invaded Czechoslovakia in 1939. The Czech government fled and that made Germany's invasion of Poland easier, which then triggered World War II. Ukraine did learn that lesson and resisted Russia’s invasion. This not only weakened Russia but staved off any military involvement for the U.S. - a savings of lives that are more precious than the money spent in supporting Ukraine. One could credit Ukraine with preventing an escalation of a larger conflict.
Now Hegseth is handing over Ukraine to Russia even before negotiations start. Vance is meeting with the German far right instead of the legitimate German government. Is the U.S. aligning itself with the Axis and turning itself against the Allies? I and my European cousins hope not. Our parents lived through the atrocities of World War II. We do not want our children to see the same atrocities.
