Dear Editor, Is it too late? Currently, there are 104 bills introduced to the Texas legislative 2025 session that directly target LGBTQIA+ people and their families. Bills that seek to criminalize medical care, the use of public facilities, and affirming conversations from educators and health care providers. These bills align with the Christian Nationalist Movement leaders Tim Dunn and Farris Wilks that are major campaign contributors to Gov. [Greg] Abbott, Lt. Gov. [Dan] Patrick, and A.G. [Ken] Paxton. In other news, Texas A&M issued a statement directing the compliance of students and employees to ICE officers on campus. This compliance along with the failure of the UT and the ATM systems to protect their own students demonstrates prioritizing political and religious ideology over the safety and well-being of their students. If you wonder why, realize that every board member for both systems has been appointed by Gov. Abbott. As a former student, I ask that students and employees stand together to protect and care for one another and to care for ALL your fellow students and employees. These universities are the [incubators] for the next generation of leaders. Unfortunately, we need our students' leadership at a time when the formal leaders are failing employees and students. Use your voices, make your presence felt, and do not let a fellow Longhorn to be persecuted under these current state and federal administrations. With power through love ... Hook 'em!
