Make It Make Sense

RECEIVED Wed., Nov. 13, 2024

Dear Editor,
Many blame Trump’s overwhelming victory on the Democrats. Even Bernie Sanders.
The Democrats, they say, focused too much on the culture wars and not enough on working-class pain; too much on the progressives and not enough on the moderates.
But effective communication depends not only on the sender and the message but on a receptive audience.
Too many men, even Black and Latino men sure to be oppressed in a Trump administration, couldn’t vote for a woman. Too many whites couldn’t imagine having another president, Black or otherwise, who would uphold minority rights. Too many short-sighted Americans preferred to believe that deporting their immigrant neighbor would help them succeed.
Christians shut out Christ’s message. Law-abiding citizens voted for a lying, racist, bigoted, vengeful, treasonous felon. The media danced around Trump’s lies.
Making the Democrats a scapegoat for our failures is a gift to those who would destroy our democracy.
