Double Standards

RECEIVED Wed., July 31, 2024

Dear Editor,
It’s difficult to understand how the leaders in Texas don’t want to allow any convicted felon to vote, but they’re fine to vote for another convicted felon to be president!
Well, not THAT difficult to understand. It’s only when the other party is “guilty.”

America Under Siege

RECEIVED Wed., July 31, 2024

Dear Editor,
July 2024 will go down in history as the month Donald Trump announced a total blockade of any future participation in government by the American people.
He has said if he wins there will be no need for coming out to vote again after November 2024. Everything will be already fixed and under control.
On the other hand, if he loses the 2024 election, voting will not be possible, since civil conflict will likely break out to try to rectify that enormous injustice.
I get it. Do you? America has become Trump’s Gaza — encircled, blockaded, under siege from all directions by a politician who will broach no more political defeats or even contests for the duration of his existence on planet Earth.
One interesting aspect of this new electoral reality for America is that children and grandchildren will no longer need to pay attention to social studies, history, or law while in school. The education needed to teach people how to govern themselves will be as useless to America as an election.

TB Anywhere Means TB Everywhere

RECEIVED Fri., July 26, 2024

Dear Editor,
Tuberculosis is often thought of as a disease in the history bin, yet it just killed six men and sickened 60 more at the John B. Connally Unit ["Tuberculosis Has Broken Out in Texas Prison System," News, July 26]. That is shocking news and should be a wake-up call to address TB everywhere.
The UN has an End TB Strategy and the Stop TB Partnership predicts 43 million people developing TB worldwide, leading to 6.6 million deaths by 2030 if not implemented. We ignore this TB alarm to our peril. TB anywhere means TB everywhere. TB unaddressed globally threatens the health of all of us.
Worldwide, TB killed 1.6 million people in 2022, more than any other infectious disease. But the End Tuberculosis Act (S. 288 and H.R. 1776) can turn the tide. The bill calls for bold U.S. goals to reach those most vulnerable to the disease. It also will help the U.S. partner with the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
While the state of Texas urgently needs to get its act together to address this prison outbreak, our members of Congress should demonstrate crucial leadership and co-sponsor the End Tuberculosis Now Act.
