I'm disappointed in your article about the disannexation election, Lost Creek in particular ["
Suburbanites Opt to Leave Austin, While Voters Keep Austin Blue in Weekend Election," News, May 10].
Your stance was that Austin was gobbling up land and taxpayers, but looking at the location of Lost Creek, those wealthy landowners most likely travel into Austin and use the resources such as roads, water, and electricity more than lower-income residents do.
Residents in Lost Creek have an average income of over $250,000 per year. They like the rising property values, but they don't want to pay the correlated taxes. In another article, it was stated Lost Creek residents had avenues to pursue disannexation that didn't involve lawmakers, but chose to search for a favorable lawmaker and grease the palm in order to have their bill written and pushed through the Legislature.
As journalists, please advise how many of us have that kind of access to our lawmakers who will then write and push through the bills we want. Seems it's only for the wealthy and everyone else can suck it up.

In answer to the gentleman who wrote about free bus service for the homeless and opposing increased security measures ["
Opinion: Cap Metro Must Safeguard No-Cost Transit for Unhoused Austinites," Feb. 16]: I have had several experiences with homeless bus riders. They are sometimes drunk and start fights on the bus. One day, as my young son and I were riding the bus home from school in the afternoon, two such men started a fight in front of us. One of these drunk men hit my son and made his mouth bleed. We had to get off the bus to tend his cut. On other occasions, mentally ill homeless men have threatened us at bus stops or on the bus. Absolutely, there are people living on the street who are respectful and responsible bus riders. But several homeless persons are actually homeless due to drug and alcohol addictions. We have to deal with soiled seats, spilled beer on the bus floors, and dangerous behaviors. I think that all bus drivers and bus riders deserve that extra help and protection. We should be able to go about our work and errands safely.
