Thanks for the Letter

RECEIVED Mon., July 17, 2023

Dear Chronicle,
There were no Letters to the Editor last week and I like to read the letter section so: Here's a letter!
    You're welcome.
Oh wait, I do have an issue! I've tried donating online when I pay my Austin Energy bill but it doesn't work. The space to enter a dollar amount will not allow input.
Does anyone else have this problem?
Austin Energy transferred me to the third party payment section, and they sent me back to AE. No one at either end could help. I called my City Council Rep. 9 "Zo" [Zohaib Qadriz] and left a voice mail a week ago. Crickets.
No call back. I knew I should have donated to his campaign darn it! Then I would exist.  Can you look into this please?  I'm sure the AE clients who are behind on their bills would appreciate it!
    p.s. The Luv Doc rocks!
Thank you!

Party's Over

RECEIVED Fri., July 14, 2023

Dear city of Austin,
You win. After nearly 20 years I will leave.
The city of Austin's Housing Finance Corporation recently purchased my apartment complex in order to, per the director for the city of Austin Housing Department, preserve "existing affordable – subsidized and naturally occurring – multi-family housing."
The city of Austin certainly has an original method of preserving naturally occurring affordable housing. That method was to raise my rent by almost 20%. The Plano-based management company the city has decided to use is now also asking us to follow "community policies" (including changing our curtains and blinds) that did not exist prior to their arrival.
The message of the city seems clear: We don't want you here and, if you are here, you aren't even allowed the simple pleasure of a curtain that isn't white.
Well you win. I won't renew next year. I'll find a new job and get out of here. Unfortunately I already renewed as I didn't think I had enough time to find a new place.
It's clear the city isn't trying to become more affordable or do anything besides transform itself entirely into a playground for the wealthy alone. I hope it works out for y'all.
It's been fun,
Mike Stephenson
