A Chant Encounter

RECEIVED Tue., Jan. 31, 2023

Dear Editor,
In your most recent issue, you quoted the chant, "from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free." [“Texan Palestinians Protest Israeli-American Council,” News, Jan. 27] This chant, while (I hope) coming from a place of good intentions, is commonly used in association with terrorist and openly antisemitic groups. I feel this chant deserved a callout explaining such, or at least deserved not to be quoted in an article that seemed to be painting the protestors in a rightfully positive light. I am Jewish and someone who proudly sympathizes with the ongoing fight to end the mistreatment of Palestinians in Israel. However, a line must be drawn between fighting for rights and supporting terrorists who despise the Jewish people, and that chant crosses that line.
