Dear Editor, Halloween is a Republican holiday. Especially in Texas. The ghosts flying about represent the souls of the dead slain by COVID, power grid failures, and mass shootings. Over 90,000 Texas have died of COVID. Near the start of the pandemic, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick chose death over mandatory life-saving closures. Gov. Greg Abbott refused to order a lockdown even after cases surged in November 2020. The Great Texas Freeze of February 2021 killed 246 people, nearly three times more than Hurricane Harvey. Although Gov. Abbott claims he has addressed this manmade disaster, Texas still does not fine gas facilities that do not weatherize, nor has it hired inspectors to assure accountability. ERCOT called for reduced energy usage several times during this past summer’s heat wave. Ninety Texans died in six mass shootings since Abbott took office, including 19 students and two adults at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, but the governor will not restrict access to assault weapons. Texas Republicans, not immigrants or transgender people, are responsible for the skeletons hanging from trees and the gravestones dotting front lawns across the state. The good news is that come Election Day we can send these grim reapers packing.
