Moment of Silence

RECEIVED Wed., Feb. 24, 2021

Dear Editor,
I wrote a few words for the woman who recently died at Esperanza Community as mentioned in your February 19 story “Dark Was the Night, Cold was the Ground.
Her name was Justine. It wasn’t her fault. She died at the Texas state-sanctioned camp during the recent extreme cold weather in February 2021. She froze to death in her tent in Southeast Austin. They found her Monday, February 15. Now other Texans know what it is like to live without electricity, heat, and a guaranteed shower. No one deserves to die like that. No one deserves to live like this. End segregation, inequalities & the disparate distribution of services in Austin and Texas. End the resulting homelessness. For Justine. For us all.
