Emergency Response

RECEIVED Mon., Nov. 16, 2020

Dear Editor,
Education in countries in the Middle East and North Africa are already lacking tremendously, as 1 in 5 children do not attend school, and the effects of the current pandemic has made matters much worse. Governments within these countries are highly focused on the effect of COVID-19 on the economy and political situation, and, consequently, providing education to children during the pandemic becomes increasingly more difficult. Developing countries do not have the resources at hand in order to create a digital learning environment for children, for, a statistic taken from the Center for Global Development and World Bank says that, less than 25% of low income nations provide an opportunity for remote learning.
Although these educational issues do not seem entirely pressing to Americans, a high education rate can be directly correlated with an increase in American jobs. When a society is more educated it allows for a more successful and economically stable society. The effects of this causes a larger consumer market for America; therefore, creating more American jobs. Thus, this demonstrates a pressing need for U.S. aid in order to assist in providing education to children in developing countries during this pandemic.
I urge Sen. Ted Cruz, Sen. John Cornyn, and Rep. Chip Roy to support the Emergency Funding for COVID-19 Global Response in order to combat the pandemic and ensure the safety and education of many children. It is essential that Americans acknowledge issues in other countries, as prosperity in these countries comes back to positively impact America.
