Dear Editor,
Re: “
Moving Right Along,” News, May 8, 2020, p.12.
Decades ago UT bulldozed centuries-old cypress trees along Waller Creek, arguing that it was absolutely necessary to expand San Jacinto Boulevard. It soon dawned on the university that it was really dumb to have a four-lane street running through the middle of campus, so they reduced San Jacinto to two lanes. Needless to say, the cypress trees were long gone.
Now another group has decided on our transportation future for us, voting $3.4 billion to reconstruct I-35. Should this actually happen, it won’t be long until Austinites realize it was really dumb to invest so much in a highway when what is really needed is mass transit and renewable energy. (Don’t forget the coronavirus is just the preliminary exam; the real test will be global climate change.)
