For God's Sake, Wake Up!

RECEIVED Thu., July 11, 2019

Dear Editor,
Anyone who doesn't understand the fear of the far right following the debates wasn't paying very close attention, namely, the inordinate number of candidates this go 'round who are able to speak Spanish, never mind how well or how fluently. The vanishing White: That's the unspoken fear of the right.
Imagine some future date in our nation's history when it is all Mexican or all Black or some other color or combination of colors and in which White is not the predominant color. What then?
What matter does it make what color predominates so long as citizens love this nation and defend its magnificent Constitution to their very last breath? None.
It doesn't matter any more than it mattered when White men invaded the shores of a land some centuries ago, a land belonging to mainly "Indians" (Native Americans) and a huge contingent of Mexicans. Those inhabitants surely loved that land at least as much as those who invaded it then and the succeeding generations – you and I – who inhabit it now.
The refugees begging asylum at our borders today come in peace, without the guns and cannons our forefathers did or any possibility whatsoever of physically overthrowing us – except perhaps with a new color or language. That result is certainly better than an invader who IS possibly able to take us by force and change who and what we are forever.
Judging the refugee by his color or his language is shallow, un-Christian, greedy, and abysmally ignorant.
Making ourselves so hated by countless hundreds of millions of Brown people living just south of us is beyond stupid or blind. It fails to understand that change is inescapable and unpreventable and is grossly ignorant of the precious and irreplaceable time and energy we lose in being able to educate the new refugee in the ways we live and love this nation.
America, for God's sake, wake up! What matters is not the flag, the national anthem or the color or language of the human who eventually ends up steering this amazing ship called America, but his fidelity to and his stewardship of the magnificent Constitution that makes the United States the most special place on Planet Earth.
