Dear Editor,
    No-kill across the board is the solution – put the onus where it belongs, on humans ["In the Doghouse," News, Feb. 8]. Why do humans think they have the right to abuse, discard animals? Whether domesticated to trust us, and help us, or as part of the rich diversity of the natural world, it is tragic and boggles the mind if one actually thinks about it. Shoot them, torture them, cage them, exploit them, slaughter them … and what consequence? This is precisely why it continues, and until harsh laws are put in place – and an abuser registry – the violence will continue, and whether passively or actively, humans will not evolve. Humans are the cause of the problems on the planet, the destructive species, and until all life is respected, the balance of nature will be in peril. Humans are arrogant and vain, not smart in the ways that nature functions, and it is imperative that this consciousness change. The ignorant scoffing is weakness, plain and simple.

Dear Editor,
    From record-breaking heat waves and mudslides in California, to rising sea levels and Hurricane Harvey, it’s clearer than ever that we need to transition away from fossil fuels and invest in clean, renewable energy. Major reports warn that absent a massive effort to draw down global greenhouse gas emissions, our planet will suffer catastrophically. Is this the legacy we want to leave our young people?
    We have the power to work toward a better future, and last Thursday, students and staff at UT-Austin reminded us of exactly that. They’re asking their university to take the lead on climate by shifting to 100% renewable energy, and I couldn’t be more supportive. As one of Texas’ top universities, UT should set an example for communities across our state, and lead the way to a cleaner, healthier future for us all.

Dear Editor,
    The reason that the zoning case at 5107 E. Riverside was uncontested at the Planning Commission is because the property owner negotiated with the Riverside Farms Road Neighborhood and the EROC Contact Team over a period of years [“Public Notice: Another Non-Revolting Development,” Feb. 15]. The result of these negotiations was a compromise that was acceptable to both the neighborhoods and the owner.
