Simply Amazing

Dear Editor,
From what I read ["AISD Prepares to Slice the Apple," News, Dec. 7], AISD is going to have a $30 million deficit this coming year so various cuts and changes need to be made. Really? With all the property taxes that are collected and keep going up at a unsustainable, above inflation rate ... the real reason is that the state "recaptures" this money, and this year more collected taxes will be sent to the state of Texas than to our own AISD! No wonder people call it Robin Hood. $672 million to the state, while $634 million stays with the rightful AISD coffers. It is projected that those numbers accelerate in 2020 to $901 million for "recapture" to the state, while only $603 million stays locally. MORE and increasing taxes for everyone in Austin while AISD keeps $31 million less. Simply amazing. No wonder people are moving to the suburbs to educate their children and having lower taxes at the same time. I'm a native Texan and [have] been living in Austin since 1987 and love this city, but overreaching policies like this need to be addressed.
