Dear Editor,
The more I learn about Texas law, from the TABC's predatory actions ["
Under Pressure," News, Feb. 1] to the lack of tenant rights because the Tenants Council in East Austin is only there to placate your complaints and not really do anything at all; to the fact that small businesses are penalized and wrongly pre-judged in any lawsuit if they are on the defense, I want to take action. Big action. Important action. Evolutionary action!
What about chemical spills and the fact that builders can use any kind of shit materials, but when the co-op or condo owners asks what exactly is the building made of, the leasing offices or management come up empty? Or crashes on the highway that end up in over 3,500 deaths per year? Who's making money off of the fact of these deaths and total disregard for human life? The fact that simple traffic police or better yet, traffic eyes (as in Switzerland) – which monitor speeding and automatically send tickets to offenders – will stop them from speeding, which will inhibit deaths, [but] is not used anywhere is disgusting.
The politicians in charge total disregard for human life is craven and depraved. Oh, don't get me started on the despicable way in which Patrick and Abbott only care about two things really. Suppressing women and stopping abortion? Why don't we send to jail any guy that masturbates and force them to bury their sperm, poor little babies?
What can I do besides fume and be frustrated? Laws change on the local level, we know that. How can we justify the total corruption in this state on so many levels? We cannot. It is an authoritarian corporate dictatorship that oppresses the working class.
