Warbler Winters Elsewhere

RECEIVED Fri., March 2, 2018

Dear Editor,
Pardon me if this correction has already been submitted but the following statement is completely false: "They have also noted the earlier arrival of other migratory birds to their winter homes here, like the rare and endangered golden-cheeked warbler, whose winter habitat is limited to within Texas." From the article: “What Are the Birds Telling Us About Climate Change?” [News, Feb. 23] by Melany Jean.
The golden-cheeked warbler (GCW) does not winter in Central Texas. It winters in Mexico and Central America. The GCWs BREEDING habitat is limited to within Central Texas. They return to Texas in March to breed, which is an important distinction because that means their reproductive success is dependent on the quality and availability of habitat and food resources here in Texas! And that is why conservation here in Texas is so important for this federally endangered bird.
Please make the correction to the article.
Thank you,
Jewell Cozort
