Homophobic, Much?/Take Two

RECEIVED Tue., Jan. 2, 2018

Dear Editor,
I have lived in Austin for 40 years and I read the Chronicle on a weekly basis. I have never written a letter to the editor of the Chronicle or to any publication.
Nevertheless, I felt compelled to say that I was shocked and disheartened by News Editor Chase Hoffberger's response to Rob Alberts' criticism re: the article about the two city manager finalists (see Dec. 22 editorial feedback and response re: the use of the word "swish"). The editor's response showed a lack of respect for Mr. Alberts, Mr. Cronk, AND the readers of the Chronicle.
Mr. Hoffberger's flippant response of providing an alternative definition of "swish" was dismissive and unprofessional. At the very least, an acknowledgment of the insensitivity of the word (especially in the context of our new openly gay city manager) should be issued. I agree with Mr. Alberts; an apology should be given (instead of the provision of an alternative definition of a word) to Mr. Cronk, the readers of The Austin Chronicle, and to Mr. Alberts for giving him an inadequate response.
