Dear Editor,
    In Michael King’s article ["Could Tax Swap Make the Cut?" News, Aug. 11], he completely fails to mention the large community that live in the Austin city limits but do not live within Austin ISD’s boundaries.
    The tax swap would negatively impact us with higher taxes than those that live within AISD, where they would benefit from the school tax reduction. Additionally, we have to endure the “gut punch” of paying more to provide additional funds and resources that won’t even benefit our own children?
    The city of Austin has large pockets of wealth flowing into AISD. Pflugerville ISD (for example) does not. Yet I am supposed to happily swallow paying more in taxes than other Austin/AISD residents with no benefit to my district, or my children – where arguably resources and programs have even less funding?
    I am aware of several schools in the Austin area that have technology programs where computers are issued to the students to aid learning and further prepare children to enter today's technology-enabled job market. Pflugerville HS has no such program.
    

   Michael King responds: Indeed, that brief story on the proposed tax swap does not mention the school district issue, but a related story in the same issue ("Point Austin: Priority Problems," Aug. 11) addresses exactly that problem as one of the "moving parts" that the Council proposal is attempting to address. Some council members said they oppose the plan precisely because of that issue. In brief, should the tax swap be approved (still a long shot), "the current proposal contemplates proportional recompense to those [six] districts in some not yet defined form." Unless those problems (and others) can be adequately addressed, Council is unlikely to approve an AISD tax swap.
