AISD Board Meeting or Pep Rally?

Dear Editor,
The special school board session last night seemed like a pep rally for Ann Richards. I fully support making necessary improvements to their facilities. And I am 100% in favor of a new Eastside public (not charter) school ["AISD’s Big Balancing Act," News, June 23].
My disappointment is that I heard no mention of the part of this bond package that would dislocate Eastside Memorial students out of their current building. Apparently, the plan is to move them to LASA/LBJ and have LASA relocate to Eastside Memorial. Just as the students at Ann Richards are part of our family, so too are the students at Eastside.
We can get all gushy and "imagine" a perfect middle school on the northeast side. But we also need to realize the time it takes to build new schools and make improvements to old buildings. What are we doing right now?
One exception to the Happy Talk yesterday came from a brave woman who spoke up on behalf of racial and economic equality. She is involved with an organization called Black Sovereign Nation. It would behoove the board, the public, educational organizations, and the entire community to pay attention to their core principles, in particular the one that calls for "education independent of white supremacist institutions."
