Dear Editor,
I am not a member of CAIR (Council on American-Islamic Relations). I am a military spouse of 22 years, who, like thousands of other military spouses, has endured the physical and emotional sufferings during multiple deployments of a loved one [“Rep. Molly White Not Quite Sure Who's American,” Newsdesk, Jan. 29]. Every deployment came out as a test, but whenever I looked at the yellow ribbons around the trees on my front lawn, I stood tall with pride and honor. While my husband was fighting the war on terrorism on foreign lands, I was teaching my four children the true meanings of "The Pledge of Allegiance" that they recited every morning at school.
Though I had recited "The Pledge of Allegiance" countless times, I had never imagined that one day the comments of a lawmaker would question my allegiance because of my Muslim faith. The comments made by Rep. Molly White that Muslims visiting her on Texas Muslim Capitol Day announce allegiance, are very insensitive and make me question the sacrifices my family and I have made during my husband’s deployments. Nonetheless, I stand tall because being loyal to my country is a part of my faith, as taught by my religion, Islam.
