Dear Editor,
On the subject of rainbow colored crosswalks to mark our "historic gayborhood," [“
Council Endorses Rainbow Crosswalks,” News, Oct. 3]: How about burnt orange crosswalks to mark the history of the Forty Acres? Or perhaps on the Eastside, the crosswalks could be painted red, white, and green to salute the historic Hispanic heritage of the area. And since our high schools all have a nearby street named for their mascots, perhaps the crosswalks at high schools could be painted in that school's colors. This idea of colored crosswalks seems quite absurd. I wonder how much the Austin Gay and Lesbian Pride Foundation will spend covering the anticipated graffiti that this liberated idea will surely bring to the doorsteps of this area. What if everyone wants their own crosswalk colors? When does it stop? Who pays? Equality is equality. Can't we all just get along together and accept one another as unique individuals without color guidelines?
